Four horses found starving, one euthanized
Enumclaw, WA (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Apr 2, 2011
County: King

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Darryl C. Lindsey
» Gina Allen-Lindsey

King County prosecutors have filed animal cruelty charges against an Enumclaw couple accused of starving four horses, including mare who was later put down.

Charged earlier this month were Gina Allen-Lindsey, 50, and Darryl C. Lindsey, a 60-year-old who received a probationary sentence after he was convicted on a 2007 animal cruelty charge.

According to charging documents filed in the current case, King County animal services officers were called on April 2 to Lindsey home following a report of several malnourished horses wandering a pasture there.

Responding officers contacted the Lindseys and were taken to the couple's barn near their home in the 30500 block of Southeast 358th Street. Entering the barn, one animal control officer recalled, the smell of urine was so strong it made her eyes burn.

Darryl Lindsey told officers he fed the horses a "cocktail" of hay, alfalfa and beet pulp, King County Detective Robin Cleary told the court. Officers noted that the horses could not reach any of the food laid out in the barn, that none of the stalls had any bedding down and that the feeders in each stall were empty.

While three of the horses -- Dallas, Dottie and Mac -- were malnourished, Cleary noted the fourth, Cassie, was "in terrible shape."

Blind in both eyes, the horse appeared skittish and, like the others, was covered with lice, Cleary told the court. Both her front hooves had spit, and her hip and back bones were clearly visible. At a veterinarian's suggestion, she was euthanized on site.

The veterinarian noted that the other horses were extremely thin as well, and that all needed dental work. According to charging documents, she concluded that the Lindseys were to blame for the poor condition of their animals, and that their treatment of the animals "is unjustified, cruel and should be stopped."

"It is my opinion that this owner does not want or cannot practice adequate maintenance and care for these horses," she told the court. "He is surrounded by dozens of other horse properties where all horses are in excellent condition. … Information and help have been easily accessible.

"His handling of the horses also suggests he doesn't really like or care for them and vice-versa."

Officers seized the remaining horses on April 8 after obtaining a search warrant.

The Lindseys have each been charged with four counts of first-degree animal cruelty. Neither has been jailed.
