Yates City, IL (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, May 29, 2011
County: Knox

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Douglas Briggs

Authorities in Knox County say a 54-year-old man facing animal cruelty charges claims he was teaching his dog a lesson for getting loose.

WGIL Radio reports that Douglas Briggs is accused of putting the dog on a leash and driving around, dragging his pet alongside his vehicle.

Prosecutors say the dog had to be taken to an emergency veterinarian to be treated for paw injuries.

Briggs was arrested Sunday in Yates City and appeared before a Knox County judge Tuesday. He faces multiple counts of animal torture and cruel treatment of animals.

The judge set Briggs' bond at $20,000. A hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday.
