When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

A 12-year-old boy has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after a kitten's front leg was broken when it was thrown against a wall then beaten with a stick.

Several children were playing with the kitten around 5 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of Brook Ave, when the boy walked up, grabbed the kitten, threw it against a wall and beat it with the stick, according to police spokesperson, Debbie George. The boy then pulled out a pocket knife and threatened to cut the kitten. One of the children in the group quickly knocked the knife out of his hands.

George said, animal control was called and found the kitten in the grass. It was taken to a vet where it received a cast for a broken right front leg. It also had bruises to its lungs and stomach area.

The kitten is expected to be up for adoption Friday.

The child's name will not be released due to his age.

Case Updates

A 13-year-old boy convicted of beating a kitten to death last spring was sentenced this week to supervised probation and given a suspended sentence of 30 days in juvenile detention.

The boy, who was 12 at the time of the incident, was convicted Oct. 18 in Suffolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

He had been accused of taking the 7-week-old kitten from children who were playing with it at a playground at the Colander Bishop Meadows Apartments off Brook Avenue on May 28.

Witnesses said he beat the animal with a stick, hurled it against a wall and attempted to stab it before another boy intervened.

The animal was taken to an emergency veterinarian and was treated for a broken leg and other injuries. It died a week later.

Judge Robert S. Brewbaker Jr. sentenced the boy Tuesday to supervised probation and 30 days in juvenile detention, suspended. He also ordered him to undergo therapy and to participate in a Parks and Recreation Department mentoring program.

The charge against the 12-year-old boy who allegedly abused a kitten has been upgraded to felony animal cruelty after the results of the necropsy were returned.

According to Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George, some children were playing with the stray kitten on a playground at the Colander Bishop Meadows Apartments off Brook Avenue on May 28, when the boy grabbed the kitten and threw it against a wall.

He then grabbed the kitten again and began hitting it with a stick. George said he also pulled out a knife and said he was going to cut the cat, when another child knocked the knife out of his hand.

Police responded and found the kitten laying in the grass.

The kitten died on June 3 after personnel at the animal shelter were notified that the kitten was experiencing difficulty breathing.

The 7-week-old male kitten was rushed to an emergency vet, but passed away shortly after arriving.

A 7-week-old kitten who is at the center of an animal cruelty case in Suffolk has died, and the 12-year-old suspect could now face felony charges.

The kitten died early Friday morning at the office of an emergency veterinarian, where he had been taken by his foster family when he experienced difficulty breathing around 1 a.m. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the city of Suffolk, said a necropsy will be performed to determine whether the cat's death was attributable to the abuse.

"If that is determined to be the case, the animal cruelty charge could possibly be upgraded to a felony," George said.
