Calling it a cowardly assault on a defenceless animal, a Crossfield shelter is offering an $800 reward for help tracking down whoever killed a kitten by throwing it from a speeding minivan.

Farmhands working near a Strathmore acreage saw something small and black get tossed from a red minivan as it sped by about 9 a.m. Wednesday, and when they went to investigate, discovered a four-week old kitten.

"Just a disgusting act of cruelty," said Jenn Fitzpatrick, manager of Tails to Tell Animal Rescue Shelter.

"It's just senseless because there's people who would have taken that kitten in, which leads me to believe these people are cruel and callous."

It was an older couple inside the minivan, said Fitzpatrick, as the farmhands were close enough to watch a woman roll down the passenger-side window and throw the tiny kitten while a man kept his foot on the gas.

Named Ditch because of where it was found, the kitten was rushed to a Strathmore vet clinic, but they refused to treat the animal without payment.

Instead, they called Tails to Tell and founder Edna Jackson rushed the kitten to Apex Animal Clinic in Airdrie, where vets discovered it had suffered a broken back, two broken legs and massive bruising to its internal organs.

The kitten died about 10 hours later.

"(The vet) said it takes a lot of power to break, especially a kitten's bone because they're almost like rubber, so they were going quite fast," said Fitzpatrick, adding that because the farmhands were able to get a vehicle description, the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will also be investigating.
