Dog hung on fence, kicked
Primera, TX (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2011
County: Cameron

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Juan Francisco De Leon
» Gloria Herrera

A Primera couple is in police custody. They're facing possible jail time for animal abuse.

A little pit bull is at Primera's city kennel. Animal control picked him up Wednesday night. Police say the dog's owners beat him up. Gordo is his name.

His owner, Juan Francisco de Leon, is in police custody accused of animal cruelty. De Leon's girlfriend, Gloria Herrera, is also in trouble. She's expected to appear before a judge Friday.

Primera police say the couple got mad at their dog for jumping the fence that surrounds their home. Police say they physically punished the animal, and what they did to the dog didn't go unseen.

It was a neighbor who picked up the phone and called police. Witnesses say they saw the dog hanging from its chain on the side of the fence.

"The animal was dangling from the fence, and they proceeded to kick the animal. I guess to teach the animal a lesson. I want to thank the witness for calling in and speaking up for that animal, which otherwise would have been unreported," says Primera police Chief Joe Rodriguez.

Rodriguez says cruelty to animals often goes unreported. It is a serious crime. If found guilty, the owners of the dog could spend time in jail.

Rene, de Leon's son, says the dog belongs to his dad but he helped care for Gordo as well.

"This surprises me," says Renee.

He says he wasn't home when the alleged beating happened. He finds it hard to believe that his family would hurt Gordo.

The city manager says Gordo was seen by a veterinarian Thursday. The animal will remain in city custody for now.
