Police are calling it a disturbing case of animal abuse in Clarksville. An innocent pit bull found tied to a tree, sliced with a machete.

The dog's owner is speaking out and wants neighbors to know there is a sick person lurking in their community. The owner first reported the dog missing Saturday night and she feels certain it was stolen from her mother's backyard; but when she finally found the pit bull two days later she could hardly believe what someone had done to her family pet.

"It goes from here all the way to here and when they brought her out it was all completely open," said Nikki Olalde as she explained the gash.

This massive gash-- 10 inches long-- is only held together by dozens of stitches on her dog, Nubeblanca.

"I felt so bad for her because I'm sure she was in so much pain," said Olalde.

It's an injury the 3-year-old pit bull suffered at the hands of someone in this Clarksville community.

"They think it was a machete or a large sword," said Olalde.

Detectives said they know this gruesome case of animal abuse was in fact intentional because the dog was found tied to a tree with a leash. She was discovered by a teen walking home from school through the woods.

"When you find your dog and see that something like this has been done to her and it wasn't because if another animal it's extremely frightening," said Olalde.

Olalde now fears for other pets in this area and Clarksville police worry the person responsible won't stop with Nubeblanca.

"If they've done this to a dog would they possible take this to a person? There are studies that show people that abuse animals may abuse people at some point in their life," said Jim Knoll with Clarksville Police.

"People need to be aware of what kind of people are living down here and what they are capable of," said Olalde.

The incident showed her both the bad and the good in this community because if it weren't for a teen taking action and calling police, she might not have Nubeblanca here at all.

"We'd really like to thank him personally and maybe give him a little bit of a reward for finding her for us," said Olalde.

Police are now asking for help solving this crime. They want anyone in the community who might have spotted this dog out with someone Sunday or Monday to give them a call.

That act of cruelty is a felony and if convicted the person responsible could get a year in jail as well as court fines.
