Hoarding - 53 dogs seized, property condemned
Port Austin, MI (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Aug 15, 2003
County: Huron

Disposition: Not Charged

Person of Interest: Ingeburg Schulz

She's known in Huron County as the dog woman, but now she has no dogs and has been locked out of her home. The county has condemned the property.

Ingeburg Schulz, 73, admits she hasn't taken care of her property all that well in recent years. She says it's livable as it is, but the county disagrees. Schulz is allowed on her to property east of Port Austin to remove her personal belongings and to clean the home.

But she can't live there.

It was back on Aug. 15 when her home was raided. Fifty-three dogs were seized, and the house was so filled with dog waste, garbage and rats that the health department declared the home unfit and ordered it demolished.

Shulz says her neighbors complained because they want her 1 acre of land. Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Stephen Allen says there have been complaints for years about the way Schulz maintains the property.

Schulz wouldn't let us into the house. It doesn't have a bathroom and the roof leaks. She says she doesn't have enough money for repairs. She has a group of friends trying to raise money for her and two doctors have declared her legally sane. For now, she's staying with a friend.
