Puppy beaten, broken ribs and internal injuries
Keyport, NJ (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Mar 21, 2011
County: Monmouth

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Brian Baker

A borough man is charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly beat his girlfriend's 5-month-old puppy after she urinated on a sofa, according to Victor "Buddy'' Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Brian Baker, 31, of Van Dorn Street, allegedly beat his girlfriend's 5-month-old mixed-breed puppy "Betty'' on March 21, breaking five ribs and causing internal injuries, Amato said.

The girlfriend, who was not home at the time of the incident, took the dog to a veterinarian who determined the injuries were caused by blunt-force trauma, Amato explained.

Baker is scheduled to appear in court on May 21, where he will face six months in jail and a $2,000 fine, if he is found guilty of the charges, Amato explained.

The puppy remains in critical condition, Amato added.
