Police K-9 punched repeatedly by suspect
Briceville, TN (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Apr 14, 2011
County: Anderson

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Richard Lee Sharp

An Anderson County man faces charges after leading police on a chase which ended when he kicked a police dog.

According to the Anderson County Sheriff's Department, officials responded to a traffic stop after the officers who stopped the car told others a suspect had left the car on foot.

Once officers arrived at the scene near Briceville Highway and Highway 116, they found a gold sedan with the driver of the car, Christopher Lee Hayes, inside and the side door open.

Officials identified the passenger who escaped as Richard Sharp who officials have been looking for to serve two felony theft warrants on file. Sharp had previously run from the police.

Due to Sharp's history, officers brought two police dogs to help in the search to find him.

Officers and the dog followed a trail through woods close to half a mile when they saw Sharp and asked him to stop. Sharp continued to run from the cops.

Police dogs traced Sharp to a shed in the back of a home off of Andy Ridge Road. One of the dogs went into the shed and officers heard a man's voice.

Officials asked the man, who they believed was Sharp, to leave the shed, but Sharp did not leave. The other dog went into the shed to look for the first dog as well as Sharp.

Sharp finally came out of the shed and was asked to get on the ground. He did not do what the officers wanted, so one of them grabbed him and made him lay on the ground. Sharp then slipped away and starting running away.

One of the dogs chased after Sharp and bit him on his left lower back. Sharp fell to the ground where the dog bit Sharp's right arm. However, Sharp still continued to try to flee. The dog tried to keep Sharp from leaving, but Sharp punched the dog in its side several times.

The dog bit Sharp's arm a last time and he turned to one of the officers and was about to punch him before the officer took Sharp to the ground.

Sharp was given medical attention for the bite marks. After officers had Sharp in custody, they started to retrace his steps and found a blue camera back with batteries, lithium and a scale inside.

Close to the back they also found a knife and four large baggies which investigators later determined contained materials for making meth.

Sharp faces charges for evading arrest, resisting stop, frisk, halt, arrest, cruelty to animals and initiation of methamphetamine manufacture process.
