199 cats and kittens found in home
Orchard Park, NY (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Apr 11, 2011
County: Erie

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jennifer Green

It's a huge problem that gets worse and worse for the SPCA of Erie County. Executive Director Barbara Carr tells us since Monday, officers have been at a home on Scherrf Road in Orchard Park dealing with 199 cats and kittens.

"Well it's a pretty typical hording case where there's too many cats and not enough cleaning up," said Carr. "There's disease involved with the cats."

While officers were cleaning out kitty litter boxes outside, inside others are keeping a close watch on their well being. Carr says most of them are suffering from upper respiratory infections as well as the possibility of ring worms. She says for now the cats must remain at the home instead of being taken to the SPCA.

"Well because these cats have potentially zoonotic diseases and certainly diseases other cats can catch." She goes on to say, "bringing that many cats into this facility would put this little guy," as she held a kitten in her arms, "at pretty big risk. You know so we want to keep everybody as healthy as possible."

The SPCA did identify the owner of the 199-cats as Jennifer Green. She is expected to be arraigned at the Orchard Park Court on Thursday 4PM. She is cooperating with the SPCA which will try to find her cats a home as soon as they are well enough to be adopted.
