Caber the pure-bred golden retriever was 9 years old when he drank a bowl of antifreeze that slowly poisoned him. "He had finally mellowed to the point where he was the perfect pet," his owner, Angus Fraser, said yesterday, outside the Snohomish County Superior courtroom where the man convicted of felony animal cruelty in Caber's death was sentenced.

Angus Fraser's neighbor, Donald Fraser (no relation to Angus), will serve 30 days of work-release jail time, do 240 hours of community service and pay restitution.

Prosecutors had pushed for a maximum 12 months, citing misgivings about Fraser's "attitude."

Fraser, a 56-year-old bus driver with no criminal history, has admitted leaving bowls of antifreeze in the yard of his rambler because he was sick of neighbors' dogs defecating on his property.

Yesterday, Fraser told the judge that he "did not mean the results," and he apologized to the dog's owners.

The case drew a flurry of media and heated comments from all sides -- from homeowners incensed by people who let animals roam and from animal lovers upset by the cruelty of Fraser's actions.

Most commercially available antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, a greenish liquid that is classified as an alcohol and tastes sweet to animals.

Surprisingly, it was Angus Fraser who stood in court to plead for leniency for his neighbor yesterday. Twelve months, he said, would be extreme punishment -- no matter how painful it was to put his beloved Caber to sleep.

"I don't like having any part of destroying another person's life," Angus Fraser said. "Enough misery's come out of this already."
