Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A heinous act of animal cruelty may have occurred in the area and local Animal Rescue League officials are looking for answers.

The body of a decapitated pit bull or boxer dog was found in the woods near the Iowa River Saturday, just west of the Riverside Cemetery.

"It is just a very bad situation," said Heidi Drager, director of the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown.

Drager was informed of the situation by Marshalltown Police who were called to the scene after some people walking in the area noticed the body. She said the dog was a grayish brown color and small and could have weighed approximately 30 pounds.

It is unclear whether the dog was alive at the time its head was cut off or already dead and also unclear how long the dog was dead. There was not a lot of evidence at the scene where the body was found and the head has not been located, Drager said.

Drager is asking anyone from the public with information on what may have happened to call the ARL office at 641-753-9046. She said the group will look to pursue animal cruelty charges if suspects are located.

"We will continue to investigate what happened and work closely with the police department," Drager said.

Case Updates

The Marshalltown Animal Rescue League says there's a reward for information leading to the arrest in a case involving a beheaded dog.

Some people noticed the dog carcass Saturday by the Iowa River near the Riverside Cemetery. Officials say the dog probably weighed around 30 pounds and could be a boxer, pit bull or mixed breed.

The ARL says it has received a few tips in the case, but nothing has turned up much information yet.

Six-hundred dollars in reward money is being offer by a private donor to the ARL. If you have any information call 641-753-9046.
