Over 30 dogs seized from deplorable conditions
Claremore, OK (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Mar 21, 2011
County: Rogers

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 4 files available

Alleged: Dennis Lee Brooks

A Rogers County man with more than 30 dogs in and around a residence in "deplorable and disturbing" condition was arrested on complaints of animal cruelty, deputies said.

Dennis Lee Brooks, 60, of Chelsea, was booked into the Rogers County Jail for animal cruelty complaints for neglecting the dogs and housing them in unsanitary and unsafe conditions, said Rogers County Deputy Johnny O'Mara in a statement.

Deputies were called to a residence in the 11000 block of East Kay Street, north of Claremore, in response to a resident complaint of dangerous conditions for the animals, O'Mara said.

They found 32 dogs inside the residence and in pens around the house, O'Mara said. Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton said conditions in the house were difficult to withstand.

"Throughout the house, in every location of the house, there was dog feces that was perhaps a foot deep in some areas and a little more or less in others," Walton said in a statement. "There were dogs everywhere. It was plainly clear that nobody had taken care of these animals for quite some time."

Brooks told deputies that he moved from the residence in January and that he would come by every other day to "feed and pet the dogs," O'Mara said in the statement.

Officers from the Claremore Animal Control were called to assist and volunteers from the Wild Heart Ranch, a local wildlife rescue, offered their assistance, according to the release. The Humane Society was also called for assistance and has agreed to pay for the needed veterinary care of the animals.
