2 dogs seized, starved nearly to death
Daleville, AL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 16, 2011
County: Dale

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Alvin Ramsey

A Daleville man faces criminal charges after Dale County Sheriff's investigators say he nearly starved two dogs to death.

Sheriff's Chief Investigator Harvey Mathis said investigators arrested Alvin Ramsey, 33, on Wednesday and charged him with two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

Mathis said the charges came after investigators found two shepherd/Lab mix dogs, both about 2 years old, in poor health at Ramsey's Daleville home.

"They weren't given enough food to sustain themselves," Mathis said. "Mr. Ramsey was just not feeding them enough food. These dogs didn't get in this condition overnight. This was a sustained starvation."

Mathis said Ramsey actually made the complaint to the Dale County Sheriff's Office about the dogs that his girlfriend had left at his home. But Mathis said Ramsey waited too long to notify the Dale County Sheriff's Office about the dogs. Mathis said Ramsey told deputies his girlfriend left the dogs at his home in June 2010.

Ramsey was released from custody at the Dale County Jail after he posted a $1,000 bond per charge.

Mathis said Ramsey voluntarily surrendered the dogs to authorities. The dogs were taken to the Ozark Animal Control facility. He said sheriff's officials are trying to find a new home for the dogs.

"These dogs looked like skeletons," Mathis said. "He has two other dogs inside that he favors, and that he fed properly but allowed the two outside to starve."

Anyone interested in adopting one or both of the dogs can call the Ozark Animal Control facility at (334) 774-4633.
