Four horses starved to death
Toney, AL (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Mar 12, 2011
County: Limestone

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 3 files available

Alleged: Jason Lee Wales

A Limestone County man was arrested accused of starving four horses to death.

Sheriff's Department Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said Jason Lee Wales, 27, of 29092 McKee Road, Toney is out of jail on $2,000 bail, charged with four counts of cruelty to animals.

McNatt said someone called authorities to report horses on the ground in a pasture on Ranch Hill Road. McNatt said when investigators and a veterinarian arrived, three horses were dead and one was so malnourished, authorities had to put it down.

Neighbors made the accusations against Wales, saying they watched as one horse after another starved to death on Wales' lot, just off Harvest Road in Toney. The unburied carcasses were strewn across the property.

"It brings tears to my eyes because it's sad," said neighbor Barbara Harris. "It's hard to look at. Nothing is done about it."

Harris and other residents said Wales barely fed the dozen or so horses, and would often beat them mercilessly, sometimes in the middle of the night. One neighbor also claimed that Wales used barb wire as a horse bit.

"He's [Wales] just not a very good person," said neighbor Dwayne Dupree. "Everything that anybody says, he's got an excuse for. He's got a lie to cover it up."

We asked Jason Wales to talk with us about these accusations. He spoke with WHNT NEWS 19 and dismissed the neighbors' claims.

"I don't know what happened," said Wales, who rejected reports of starvation. "I've got problems in this neighborhood. Not going to call names, but there's problems. I've got horses in other places, you can go look at them. I feed them and water them."
