Conway Police have charged Sarah Hemmingway Lewis, 49, of Conway, with Animal Cruelty after officers engaged in a traffic stop spotted her dog with a chain embedded in its neck.

On February 24th, 2011 Conway Police Department's Animal Control Officer responded to a traffic stop conducted at 5th Avenue and Blossom Street by another officer, to check on the welfare of a dog in the vehicle.

Upon arrival, the officer observed a chow in the backseat that appeared to have a log chain embedded in the skin of its neck, as later confirmed by the officer.

The dog was seized and taken to the Horry County Animal Care Center for further medical evaluation. It was determined the dog would need surgery for the wounds, and the dog was given medical treatment.

Lewis was issued a citation for Animal Cruelty, and is scheduled to appear in court on the charge on Wednesday, March 16th, 2011.


Case Updates

Sarah Lewis Hemingway, 50, of Conway were found guilty of animal cruelty Wednesday.

According to a press release, Judge Andy Hendrick ordered her to reimburse the Horry County Animal Care Center for the monies expended in the care and treatment of the animal and ordered that she relinquish all rights to the animal to the shelter. The chow is in good condition and is currently being treated at the Horry County Animal Care Center where it will soon be listed for adoption.

Hemingway was charged on February 24th, 2011 after officers located a chow in the backseat of a vehicle during a traffic stop, with a log chain embedded in its neck. Officers seized the dog and transported it to the Horry County Animal Care Center where a medical evaluation was performed.
