Animals taken into protective custody
Bozrah, CT (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Nov 28, 2010
County: New London

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Carol Mayefsky

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

Fourteen animals remain in protective custody, and a Bozrah woman is due in court today to face multiple animal cruelty charges related to their poor health and lack of care.

Carol Mayefsky, 53, was arrested last month after repeated attempts by regional animal control officer Michele Kellough and local health officials to get Mayefsky to clean up her flea-infested home at 63 Stanton Hill Road.

Kellough, in a six-page arrest warrant affidavit, describes squalid living conditions that included the accumulation of feces and garbage inside and outside the house. The condition of the house, occupied by Mayefsky and Chucky Langlois, was first noted during a delivery of groceries from the local food bank.

Five birds, seven cats and a German shepherd mix named Cassie were removed from the house Sept. 8 and taken for immediate veterinary care. Kellough was joined by representatives from the town of Bozrah, Uncas Health District, Southeastern Mental Health Authority, Colchester state police and the local rescue organization PAWS.

Uncas Health issued a violation of public health order, giving Mayefsky two weeks to clean up the house.

After several extensions were granted, animal control went back to the house to seize a litter of four newborn kittens. Two of the kittens, found under a refrigerator, died.
Kellough noted that the kittens were locked away from their mother. PAWS took the cats and kittens into their fostering program.

Town-ordered cleanup

Between Sept. 8 and Oct. 28, Mayefsky was provided with hundreds of trash bags, and the town hired Sterling Superior Services to drop a large Dumpster in the yard, court records show. The town paid for the disposal of more than three tons of garbage from the house, Kellough said, although several rooms in the house remained untouched.

"The floors remained unswept and debris was still abundantly present, including both live and dead insects, as well as maggots," Kellough wrote in her report. "Mayefsky proudly pointed out to (Kellough) that her bathroom no longer had a toilet covered with layers of dried feces and a 4-foot high tower of feces-soiled toilet paper sitting next to it."

To date, Kellough said, the animals are being cared for. Mayefsky has yet to enter a plea in the case. She faces 14 counts of animal cruelty and eight counts of failure to vaccinate.

Case Updates

A Bozrah woman facing numerous animal cruelty charges was accepted into a special program for first-time offenders, records show.

Carol Mayefsky, 53, was arrested in December after repeated attempts by regional animal control and local health officials to get Mayefsky to clean up her home at 63 Stanton Hill Road.

Fourteen animals were taken into protective custody and Mayefsky was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, because of the animals' poor health and lack of care.

Court records show Mayefsky was accepted into the accelerated rehabilitation program and will have one year to abide by court rules, after which time Mayefsky will have a clean criminal record.

A Bozrah woman says she is not guilty of mistreating animals.

Carol Mayefsky was in court on Monday to face 14 counts of an animal cruelty after authorities say they seized five birds, a dog and seven cats from her home after an investigation lasting several months.

She was arrested after repeated efforts by animal control officers to get her to clean up her property that authorities say was strewn with tons of trash, animal waste and infested with fleas.

The animals were placed in protective custody.

The town even paid to have about three tons of trash hauled away.

The 53-year-old Mayefsky says she's been working with authorities to clean up her property but it's an old farmhouse.
