Dog and puppy found frozen to death, emaciated
Louisville, KY (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 3, 2011
County: Jefferson

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Karen Y. Williams

A Louisville woman was arrested Monday afternoon after a dog and a puppy were found dead in her backyard.

Authorities say that 42-year-old Karen Williams, along with two other unnamed suspects, intentionally allowed the dogs to die.

A concerned witness called Metro Animal Services on Feb. 3, after they saw the dead animals in the back yard. When representatives of Metro Animal Services arrived at the home to investigate, they found a dog chained to a back yard fence, lying on the ground, and a puppy inside a wired crate.

Both animals were dead, according to an arrest warrant.

The puppy -- which was also dead -- appeared to be frozen to the plastic bottom of the crate.

"The puppy had visible signs of pain and suffering visible by the protruding ribs and pelvic area," the warrant states. "This puppy had no shelter from the extreme cold and freezing rain and snow that has occurred over the approximate seven-day period that the defendants admit that the dogs were there."

Authorities say there was a blanket inside the crate, and it was soiled with frozen feces and urine.

Williams told police that her son left the dogs at her house roughly 1-2 weeks before, but that she wasn't responsible for them.

Metro Animal Services disagreed, and charged Williams with animal torture and cruelty to animals.

Williams was arraigned this morning and pled not guilty. A judge ordered her not to have any contact with animals.
