BC SPCA animal cruelty investigators are seeking the public's help in identifying the owner of a day-old puppy who was abandoned inside a shoe box at a bus stop in Maple Ridge on Friday, the agency said Monday.

The black and white mixed-breed puppy, which weighed only 157 grams -- the weight of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese -- was found in the box inside a garbage bag under a bus stop bench on 207th Avenue, the SCPA said in a written statement.

SPCA officers rushed her to the Dewdney Animal Hospital, where Dr. Adrian Walton treated the puppy for hypothermia and seizures.

"We started feeding her every two hours but it had been so long since she had eaten her blood sugar level had dropped to the point of causing the seizures," Walton said in the release. The veterinarian added that he believes there must be more puppies from the same litter and is worried about the fate of those animals and the mother.

The dog was found wrapped in a small beige fleece blanket inside a PUMA shoe box for a pair of women's trainers (size 7 1/2). The SPCA was alerted after someone heard whimpering and scratching from inside the garbage bag.

SPCA officers have christened the dog Peanut and note she is now out of danger and living at the SPCA's Maple Ridge branch where manager Mark Vosper says she is eating every four hours .

"Meanwhile, we have launched a cruelty investigation and are seeking the public's help in providing any information that may help us identify her owner or the whereabouts of any other puppies," Vosper said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Maple Ridge SPCA Branch at 604-463-9511.
