Puppy tossed from SUV, caught on tape
Colorado Springs, CO (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jan 29, 2011
County: El Paso

Disposition: Open
Case Images: 2 files available

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A woman standing at the front of 7-Eleven on Jan. 29 didn't see what flew out of the large, white SUV parked a few feet away.

It was small, this much was certain. But when she stepped closer, an 8-week-old Chihuahua ran straight into her arms.

"She opened up the door and was just kind of in shock," said Erin Carroll, spokeswoman for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

The Humane Society is now asking the public to help find whomever tossed the Chihuahua puppy out of the SUV, abandoning it in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven, 1428 W. Colorado Ave.

The store's surveillance camera filmed the incident in front of the store around 6:45 p.m., during which time the dog suffered a minor scrape to one of its back legs.

Animal abandonment is a misdemeanor and anyone with information is asked to call 473-1741. It is possible that whoever was in the SUV did not own the dog, Carroll said -- leaving open the possibility that it was previously lost or stolen.

He is not up for adoption.

Carroll was told that the dog is "just a happy-go-lucky puppy" who "doesn't seem all that fazed by what happened." He has since been placed in a foster home.

But the video, she said, is still heartbreaking. Once the dog is thrown from the SUV, it briefly chases the vehicle before running to the woman outside the store.

"I just think it shows how loyal they are and how trusting these little dogs are," Carroll said. "We're definitely so glad that he's OK. It's going to be a happy ending for the dog."
