Dog locked in trunk of car
Queen Creek, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Aug 1, 2010
County: Maricopa

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Katie Troung

A Gilbert woman was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty after reports that she was driving a dog around in the trunk of her car in the summer and not providing it with food and water.

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies were called to a groomer in Queen Creek in August. The groomer told deputies that Katie Troung, 33, had taken the dog out of the trunk of her white four-door BMW sedan on the 110-degree day, Lt. Brian Lee said.

The groomer told deputies that the dog was soaking wet and dehydrated. The groomer took the dog to a veterinarian for an evaluation, Lee said.

Deputies did not have enough information to arrest Troung at the time, Lee said. They recently obtained the veterinarian's evaluation of the dog, which showed that the dog had a temperature of 103 degrees, distressed breathing, heat stroke and was dehydrated.

Troung told authorities that the shih tzu belongs to her sister and that she had been taking care of it for two months at the time of the incident, Lee said.

The shih tzu is in the custody of the Sheriff's Office at Maricopa Animal Safe Haven, where it has been cared for by inmates.
