weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

A 36-year-old man has been charged with setting the Commerce City stable fire that killed a dozen horses and a goat.

Narciso Amaya-Bustillos has been charged with one count of first-degree arson, 13 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and two counts of criminal mischief, according to Adams County District Attorney Don Quick.

All are felonies.

Commerce City officers and the South Adams Fire Department were called to the blaze at 8468 Unita St. about 3:20 p.m. on May 9.

The stable was fully engulfed in flames and a number of people were trying to save the animals.

Amaya-Bustillos was seen fleeing the scene, according to a joint statement by Quick and Commerce City Police Chief Phil Baca.

Three days later, on May 12, Amaya-Bustillos was at the stable and sustained serious injuries as he was attempting to leave, according to the statement.

He was hospitalized. On May 22 he was arrested by Commerce City police.

Case Updates

The Adams/Broomfield District Attorney announced the sentence of a 37-year-old man who burned a horse stable in May, killing 12 horses.

District Attorney Don Quick says Narciso Amaya-Bustillos was sentenced to 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections on Wednesday. He has also been ordered to pay $149,380 in restitution.

Commerce City Police responded to a call in the area of 8468 Uinta Street of a structure fire on May 9. When police arrived, they say the horse stable, housing 12 horses, several chickens and a goat, was engulfed in flames and several men were trying to rescue the animals. Screams from the horses were reported by rescue workers when they arrived on the scene.

All of the animals died in the fire.

"This is the most severe case of animal cruelty I have seen in my 20-plus years as a prosecutor. Placing human and animal lives in such jeopardy is inexcusable" Quick said in a news release. "The Commerce City Police and Fire Departments are to be commended. If not for their heroic efforts, human lives would have been lost as well that day."

Amaya-Bustillos attempted to flee the area by train on May 12, loosing his arm in the process. He pled guilty to second-degree arson and aggravated cruelty to animals, both felonies, on Nov. 11.
