A city man who allegedly killed an elderly man's dog at Taylor Farm was arrested after a police investigation, authorities said.

Norwalk police spokesman Lt. Peter Randall said officers arrested Thomas Turney, 48, of 19 Westport Ave., at home Saturday.

Turney was at Taylor Farm at about 7 p.m. June 19 when he saw his friend's pit bull interacting with an 8-year-old shih tzu named Chimbok, Randall said. Chimbok's owner, a 74-year-old Norwalk man, told police the dogs were sniffing each other.

Randall said Turney "became concerned," approached Chimbok and kicked the dog, sending it into the air.

Turney allegedly threatened to assault the shih tzu's owner when the man asked why Turney had kicked the canine and asked him not to do it again.

Chimbok's owner phoned police from a cell phone and took the dog to a veterinarian for treatment, but the animal died in the early morning hours of June 20. The cause of death was a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, Chimbok's veterinarian said.

The dog's diaphragm muscle ruptured, allowing abdominal organs such as the liver and stomach to place pressure on the lungs.

Turney was charged with cruelty to animals and second-degree threatening.

He was released on $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Aug. 19 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
