A Colorado Springs man accused of stomping his girlfriend's puppy to death told the woman he killed the dog because she wouldn't answer the phone, court records show.

Christopher Blackstone, 25, became enraged after his girlfriend stormed out during a Dec. 23 argument in their apartment in the 1100 block of Mazatlan Circle, police said.

Talitha Peterson-Hooks told authorities that she ignored repeated phone calls before receiving a disturbing text message early the next morning.

"If you would have answered your phone, your dog would still be alive," Blackstone allegedly wrote her, before telling her to check the trash bin outside their apartment.

Peterson-Hooks found the animal's body in a white garbage bag spattered with blood. She called police about 4 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

An animal control officer said the animal's killer stomped on its head and slammed it against something hard, Colorado Springs police said in an arrest affidavit. The dog was between 3 and 5 months old, authorities said. Its breed and gender weren't disclosed in court documents.

Blackstone was booked into El Paso County jail on suspicion of cruelty to animals, a felony. He's held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

He was also accused of felony criminal mischief after trying to kick his way out of a police patrol car after his arrest, court papers said. Blackstone caused more than $1,000 in damage to the door, police said.

Peterson-Hooks, 25, was granted a restraining order against Blackstone in May, alleging that he beat her. The couple apparently resumed their relationship after the protective order was lifted about two weeks later.

Two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence that were filed against Blackstone in May against her were also dropped.
