Dogs found severely injured, one dies
Torrington, CT (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 27, 2010
County: Litchfield

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Nathan Mosimann

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

On July 6, Nathan Mosimann, of Torrington, was arrested at his home on two counts of animal cruelty. It was reported that eight months prior to the police receiving the abuse reports, Mosimann had been home alone with his dog and a pot of boiling water had been "accidentally" dropped on the animal. The dog was taken to the vet and it was found to have severe burns over 45 percent of its body.

The vet that performed the examination said the burn injuries were not consistent with Mosimann's claims that the water had been "accidentally" dropped on the dog.

Mosimann's other dog suffered a similar act of abuse. Police report that they received information that the dog was lying on the floor, unable to get up and bleeding from the mouth after having been alone with Mosimann. The dog was brought to a vet and treated for an ear infection. No x-rays were done due to the cost involved. The animal died later that same day at Mosimann's home.

An autopsy revealed that the dog had died from a fractured skull and fractured neck, injuries not consistent with Mosimann's claims that she had been hit by a car.

Case Updates

A Torrington resident facing allegations of animal cruelty had his day in court Wednesday.

Nathan Mosimann pled not guilty to two charges of cruelty to animals in Bantam Superior court. His case was continued to Sept. 22.

Mosimann, 22, was charged after a family member reported that the death of Mosimann's beagle, Carly, seemed suspicious. Carly died on April 27, one day after a vet diagnosed the six-year-old beagle with vertigo. Mosimann's girlfriend brought Carly back home in seemingly good health on April 26; Carly went missing April 21 after Mosimann left the dog outside without a chain.

An autopsy found that Carly's injuries " the dog was found lying on the floor, unresponsive, and "stiffly curled in an awkward looking position with blood coming out of Carly's mouth" " were inconsistent with Mosimann's account of Carly running away and being struck by a car. Rather, the autopsy report found that the injuries were consistent with "a heavy object" falling on Carly's skull or striking the beagle.

In the course of investigating Carly's death, police linked Mosimann to an earlier case of alleged abuse. Another one of Mosimann's dogs, Teddy, had been found to have third- and fourth-degree burns over 45 percent of his body after a vet's examination. Mosimann claimed the burns came when a pot of boiling water "accidentally" landed on Teddy, but the vet claimed that these injuries were inconsistent with that account.

Mosimann was taken into custody without incident on July 6, and the charges are misdemeanors.
