Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

The shooting and partial butchering of a dairy cow is being investigated by the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office.

The carcass was found Tuesday morning on Kyles Mill Road in a rural part of the county.

Sheriff's Maj. Delbert Dudding said the cow was shot in the head, dragged with a rope or cable from Flowing Springs Road to Timber Ridge Road and then to Kyles Mill.

The sheriff's department received a call about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday after a passer-by discovered the dead cow. He said it appears the animal was shot sometime early Tuesday. The cow's tenderloins were removed, and it appeared that attempts were made to also remove one hind quarter, he said. A bullet was recovered from the cow's head, Dudding said.

He said the animal's value was likely "several thousand dollars" and said it was pregnant when killed.

"And we don't have that many dairymen left in the county," Dudding said.

Dudding encouraged anyone who might have seen something or otherwise have information about the case to call the sheriff's office at 473-8230.
