Authorities are looking for a 20-year-old man to question him in an ongoing animal cruelty investigation in which neighbors suspect the dogs at a home were not fed properly so they ate the cats living inside.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office is trying to find Daniel Ware of Denham Springs. His mother is being treated for cancer out of state and he was reportedly left to care for her pets.

People who live near the house on Asphodel Street in Denham Springs claimed they never really paid attention to it until Sunday. They said a bunch of dogs broke out of the windows and started roaming the neighborhood. One lady decided to check things out. She did not want to be identified but did describe the scene.

"You could smell something when I walked up to the door," she recalled. "I almost started crying because I never seen nothing like that in my life."

Detectives who were called to investigate the possible case of animal cruelty said the condition of the house was so bad they had to call the fire department to bring air masks so the investigation could be completed.

A woman who has been living in the neighborhood for 26 years said there were always cats hanging around, but the rest of the pets are a mystery.

"Oh, we complained about the cats for years, but I didn't know nothing about the dogs, until Sunday," she explained.

"They were able to find more of the puppies that were in the house, but no cats," said Perry Rushing, spokesperson for the sheriff's office. "Neighbors speculated that the dogs have not been fed properly and had eaten some of the cats."

In pictures provided by sheriff's deputies who responded to the house show cleaning supplies stacked on top of what appears to be a piano, but it is clear they were not being used. Rushing said one deputy described it as "despicable."

"He said in all his years of law enforcement he has never seen anything like this," Rushing added.

Ware has been known to drive a beige Toyota Corolla with license plate number KIY 606. He is about 5'10" and weighs about 165 pounds. He also has several outstanding warrants for traffic violations.
