Detectives in a Louisiana parish are investigating the second case of animal cruelty there in less than a week, after receiving reports of a house where seven dogs were apparently abandoned by their owners.

According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, Traci Woodward and her daughter, Cassandra Cason, were charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

Deputies said the two boxers and five others of different breeds, some of them newborns, were starving and sick when they were rescued Thursday morning.

Investigators reported the two women rented a home off LA 16 in Denham Springs, but when they were evicted, the dogs were allegedly left to fend for themselves.

Fresh dog food was found inside the home, but the pets could not reach it. One of the dogs had recently given birth to at least three puppies.

"One is not doing well at all," said Terri Dunlap, president of the Livingston Parish SPCA. "They are all going to spend a couple of days in the hospital."

Woodward was charged with five counts of animal cruelty, while Cason was charged with two counts. They were cited and released.

When deputies go out to these types of calls, they reach out to the Livingston Parish Council, who then puts the animals in the caring hands of the SPCA.

Dunlap said when the dogs reach the facility they're nervous, scared and hungry for both food and attention.

"It breaks my heart. There's no reason for a dog to be in this kind of condition," she explained.

Abused pets are sent to the SPCA because the parish does not have an animal control shelter. According to Dunlap, reports of mistreated animals have been on the rise lately.

According to deputies, someone called them with concerns the dogs were not getting the proper care.

Anyone who sees possible animal abuse is encouraged to call the police department or sheriff's office in their area.
