more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

A woman who allegedly ran the property at 354 Holts Spring Road near Hurley has been charged today with 21 misdemeanor counts related to animal abuse by Stone County Prosecutor Matt Selby.

Judy Lee Chambers, 65, faces 12 counts of improper disposing of a dead animal, and 12 counts of animal abuse. Stone County Prosecutor Matt Selby says Chambers is from Crane and works in Galena. Online court records list Chambers as being from Marionville.

Charges were filed at 9 a.m. on March 24, 2010.

A check of records indicated the residents of the home had applied for a breeder's license but were found not to be in compliance with state statutes at the time of application.

Armed with the warrant, police and members of the Missouri Humane Society went to the property on Monday, March 22.

According to the Stone County Sheriff, a total of 55 dogs were located on the residence, with several being emaciated. Over 20 of the dogs were located inside the home, and two small puppies were found inside the home that needed immediate care.

In searching the outside grounds, a plastic storage container was located which contained 11 deceased dogs ranging from newborn to adult age.

These animals were taken by the Humane Society of Missouri to be cared for and thoroughly examined.

The rescued dogs are in the custody of the Humane Society in St. Louis.

A disposition hearing for the animals is scheduled for Wednesday, March 31 at 9:30 a.m. in Galena. Chambers is to appear in court next on Apr. 20.

Case Updates

An elderly woman from Marionville has pleaded guilty to animal abuse after investigators found several sick and dead animals on her property near Hurley last March.

Stone County Prosecutor Matt Selby says Judy Lee Chambers, 66, pled guilty on November 2, 2010 to animal abuse and improper disposal of a dead animal.

Investigators went to Chambers home at 354 Holts Spring Road on March 16, 2010 and observed several dogs with no access to food or water.

Sheriff Richard Hill said at the time, "Investigators knocked on the front door of the residence and could detect a strong foul odor of what was believed to be feces and urine coming from the home, and saw at least 13 dogs running loose and free inside the residence, with several of the dogs appearing to be emaciated. They also observed an abundance of feces and trash covering the floor."

Investigators applied for a search warrant to check on the well being of the animals. Armed with that warrant, sheriff's deputies and members of the Missouri Humane Society raided the property on Monday, March 22, and found 55 dogs, several of them emaciated and in need of veterinary care.

The animals rescued included more than 40 Dachshunds, four Great Pyrenees, one German Shepherd, several Boston Terriers and five mixed breed dogs. Two four-week-old puppies, who were not being kept with their mother, were severely dehydrated and taken to a local veterinarian for immediate treatment.
