County: Shelby

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Marcus D. Prewitt

Patricia Watson and others at an apartment complex in Frayser were outraged by what happened to a neighbor's defenseless dog late Thanksgiving night.

"All I know is it was pitiful, really pitiful to do a dog like that," said Watson.

Memphis Police said a drunken Marcus Prewitt went off on his girlfriend's poodle mix after he claimed the small dog bit him.

"I think if he does it to a poodle, I think somebody needs to do it to him" said Watson.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Prewitt began his rampage by yelling that he was going to kill the dog. His girlfriend told police Prewitt then stabbed the dog repeatedly with a kitchen knife before beating it with a can opener. Police say Prewitt even broke the bed rails off a child's bed to make sure the dog was dead.

"Oh, that's horrible," said Annie Kutsikozich.

She spent the day after Thanksgiving at a dog park with her larger Goldendoodle and has little sympathy for people charged with animal cruelty.

"I always say I think jail time is absolutely appropriate," said Kutsikozich. "The Michael Vick incident and stuff, I think jail time is always appropriate for animal cruelty without a doubt."

Police said at least one of his girlfriend's children witnessed Prewitt killing their dog. They told police the dog never bit anyone in the past.

Marcus Prewitt is charged with animal cruelty and was being held on a $4,000 bond.
