St. Francis County Sheriff Bobby May was in no mood for denials from Everett Woods, Jr. as Woods was booked into the jail Friday on felony animal cruelty charges.

"Put him in the deepest, darkest cell we got," said the sheriff.

Woods claimed he had no knowledge a six year-old horse named "Blaze" was found nearly starved to death on the Woods family property.

"It's the worst case of animal cruelty I've ever witnessed," Sheriff May said.

Deputies discovered the horse after receiving a tip about possible abuse at the Woods place, located off a rural gravel road near Colt, Arkansas.

The sheriff said the horse was also covered in what appeared to be motor oil to keep flies away.

"The animal was literally cooking," said May. "The skin was coming off the horse."

Deputies reported finding a malnourished dog and nearly a dozen puppies on the Woods property as well. They survived, but the horse had to be put down.

"Animals are like children," said May. "They can't defend themselves. It's up to humans to take care of the animals."

May said it was up to us to pay the penalty when we condone animal abuse or do nothing to stop it.

Everett Woods, Sr. was also expected to be charged in the case.
