Some of the 57 dogs rescued from filthy, crowded conditions at a house on Cleveland's West Side are in new homes today, and the rest will be placed by the end of the week.
Susan Ross, director of development for the Animal Protective League, said that the dogs are being adopted by people selected from more than 1,100 who called after seeing the story in the newspaper and on television.
The APL drew the names of the callers at random, interviewed them and invited them to pick out a dog from among the 50 available. Seven have been euthanized because of sickness.
All of the dogs were small breeds such as dachshunds, Chihuahuas and hairless Chinese cresteds.
"Many of the dogs had skin problems," said Ross. "It may be as simple as giving them a good bath or it might require more care. Many have teeth problems. These dogs will need some help."
Ross stressed that the APL has plenty of noncelebrity animals that also need good homes.
"We have 26 dogs, 32 cats and kittens, 10 rabbits, nine gerbils and six ferrets," she said. "I tell everyone to please consider one of those."
Mary Ann Mackojc, whose home was raided last week, was at the APL yesterday. She denied her house was unclean and asked for four of the dogs to be returned.
Ross said nothing will be done until the investigation into animal cruelty at the house is completed. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
