14 horses, 3 donkeys in deplorable conditions
Livingston, TX (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Nov 15, 2010
County: Polk

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

The Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigations Team assisted the Polk County Sheriff's Department in the rescue of 14 horses and three donkeys Monday from a rural property located on the east side of Livingston, Texas.

All of the animals were living in sub-standard, deplorable conditions and lacking proper food, water, shelter and medical care, the SPCA said.

The animals were so hungry that they resorted to eating the bark from the surrounding trees, according to Polk County Animal Control.

The animals were safely transported to the Houston SPCA satellite equine facility, where they received medical treatments for a range of issues, the SPCA said.

A court hearing is scheduled for next Monday in Polk County.
