A dog shot in the head several times was found dying in a dumpster.

"I have never seen (anything) like that in my life," said Nikita Cowels.

She and her little sister heard barking Saturday afternoon at The Village apartment complex in Wixom. The barking was coming from a dumpster.

"When they pulled the dog out, it was like a big, deep cut and a tumor on the side of the dog's face. It was like blood all in the dog's eyes. It was just horrible," Cowels said.

The dog was a German shepherd estimated to be about ten years old with a large tumor near his throat. He'd been shot in the head, wrapped in a garbage bag, thrown away and left for dead. Police immediately took the dog to a veterinarian, but it couldn't be saved.

"The dog was euthanized, and subsequently the doctor was able to tell us that he had been shot in the head nine times with some type of a pellet gun or rifle," said Wixom Police Chief Clarence Goodlein.

Wixom Police say it's not clear whether or not the person who did it would end up being prosecuted. At the present, they just want to find the owner.

Police want to know was this a case of animal cruelty or was someone trying to put down a sick dog and couldn't afford a visit to the vet.

"People, when they're faced with these types of decisions, when they don't have the money to take care of their animal, don't need to resort to something like this if that's what has happened here," Goodlein said.

Instead, the chief said most vets will euthanize a sick animal for free if the owner can't afford it.
