A Rowan County couple pleaded guilty Nov. 10 in Rowan County District Court to 14 counts of cruelty to animals.

James and Luevern J. Fultz of 6020 U.S. 60 East, both entered into a plea agreement admitting to the abuse of 14 dogs found on their property on Sept. 1.

Investigators said the dogs were in horrible conditions, one having a broken leg. After an evaluation by local veterinarian Dr. Ralph Derrickson, the dogs were heavily infested with fleas, had parasites internally and externally, and one of the dogs died due to heartworms.

James Fultz told a Lexington television station that he could not afford a veterinarian and tried to care for the dogs as best he could.

Animal activists followed the case closely since September when the Fultzes were charged with failure to get a kennel license, a misdemeanor.

The couple was charged with cruelty to animals when they appeared in court Nov. 3 on the failure to get a kennel license charge.

Cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor.

The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
