A cat left to die in a sealed garbage bag is on the road to recovery after being fed and treated by a Durham veterinarian.

The 2 1/2-year-old, long-haired, brown and grey cat was found Wednesday in a ditch covered in fleas, emaciated and weighing only five pounds. She was so weak she couldn't crawl from the ditch, after clawing her way out of a sealed garbage bag.

The Durham Region humane society, that is paying for the animal's care, said the cat was barely moving when it was found Wednesday near a pile of trash on Chalk Lake Rd. near Dagmar Ski Resort north of Ajax.

A passerby called the humane society Tuesday after spotting the cat.

"We're asking anyone who may have seen someone in the area on Tuesday to call us so we can find out who would do this to a cat," said animal cruelty investigator Insp. Debby Houghton, who named the cat Autumn.

"The cat was basically starving. She hadn't eaten for several days," she said.

"We unfortunately get animal cruelty calls every day, they never seem to stop," Houghton said.

After spending a day at the clinic, Autumn is improving and remains on intravenous fluids and is being fed small amounts of food every hour.

"All her tests have come back and she's all clear of any viruses, kidney problems or internal problems," Houghton said, adding they hope to send Autumn to stay at a foster home in a couple of days.

Anyone with information is asked to call the humane society at 905-433-2022 ext. 2 or Crime Stoppers with anonymous tips for a reward of up to $2,000 at 1-888-222-TIPS (8477).
