An 18-year-old man and a teenage boy are accused of chaining a pit bull to a fence and setting it on fire.

Chicago police spokeswoman Alice Casanova said Dijon Fisher was charged with one count of felony animal torture. A 16-year-old boy was cited in a juvenile petition with animal torture.

Casanova said the two suspects told investigators they tied the dog to a fence, poured a flammable liquid on it and set it on fire on the morning of Aug. 11.

A witness called police after finding the brown-and-white dog in flames in an alley on the city's South Side. The dog was still living but was later euthanized.

In its own statement, the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the dog also had several fresh bite wounds, indicating that he he was probably used for dog fighting.

PETA announced Tuesday that it would match a $2,500 reward offered by the Humane Society of the United States last week for information about who was responsible for the crime. Representatives from neither organization were available for comment early Thursday.

A preliminary hearing for Fisher was set for Aug. 27, in felony court, police said.

The dog suffered burns over 70 percent of its body and was euthanized.

Casanova said police still do not know who owned the dog.
