A teenager could face animal cruelty charges after he allegedly put a cat inside a hot oven.

Charles Garnett says his cat Tigger still walks gingerly, with all four of his paws burned.

"She says something very bad had happened to him, but she hadn't figured out what happened," said Garnett.

Garnett says last Saturday evening, he took Tigger to his girlfriend's apartment on North Prospect Street in Lodi. Garnett says he left the cat in the care of her 18-year-old son, while he and his girlfriend went out on a date.

"When the guy went and picked up his cat, he found out that there had been injuries to the cat, put two and two together, and figured something happened at the house," said Lodi police chief Keith Keough.

According to a police report, when Garnett's girlfriend returned home, both Tigger and her cat were outside. She then noticed burns on all four of his paws.

"She found cat hair in the oven and discovered that his paws were burnt. That's how I found out that her son threw him in the oven," said Garnett.

"The officer went and talked to the 18-year-old. He did not admit to injuring the cat, however, he did admit to having the cat during that period of time when the cat was injured," said the chief.

According to the police report, the teen told police that both cats had escaped from the apartment and that Tigger was hurt when he located him. Investigators say they don't buy that explanation.

"The only thing that we've been able to determine was that the 18-year-old was upset with his mother's boyfriend, specifically. I don't think we've been able to determine exactly what it was that angered him," said Keough.

Garnett said the teen told him Tigger attacked his mother's cat.

"He said it was revenge for what Tigger done to their cat, and he doesn't like the way I speak to his mom," Garnett said.

Garnett says Tigger is doing much better, but is on medication to ease the pain and treat his burns.

The case has been turned over to the Medina County SPCA.

Case Updates

An 18-year-old man is accused of putting a cat into a hot oven.

The cat named "Tigger" survived but was severely burned.

Lodi Police tell 19 Action News that on October 30th, the cat's owner Chuck Garnett left the cat with his friend Stephanie Atkinson because he was in the process of moving to a new home.

Stephanie had to leave the apartment for a short while and her 18-year-old son, Randy put the cat into the oven.

Animal cruelty charges are pending against the teen.

Besides the burned paws, Tigger also suffered internal damage.

The cat is slowly recovering, with medications from a local veterinarian at the Litchfield Vet Clinic.

Chuck has to put a salve or cream on the burned paws, and has to give the Tigger daily doses of medicine orally.
