One dog, two puppies stabbed during burglary
Attica, IN (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Oct 30, 2010
County: Fountain

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Christopher D. Bartlow
» Theodore E. Robinson, III

Two men are in custody after a Saturday night burglary during which they stole items, killed three dogs and tried to set the house on fire to cover up the burglary and the deaths.

Christopher D. Bartlow, 18, of Attica was arrested Sunday morning and charged with burglary, theft, arson and killing a dog, all felonies. Theodore E. Robinson III, 18, of Attica was arrested a short time later on the same charges.

Both were booked into the Fountain County Jail on $25,000 bond.

Attica police said Bartlow had previously lived in the residence at 203 N. Perry St., which was occupied by Clayton Edenburn and Chelsea Snoeberger. Bartlow recently had been in conflict with Edenburn and police believe Bartlow and Robinson went to the residence to enact some sort of revenge, according to a press release.

No one was home at the time, but there were three dogs in the home -- an adult male pit bull and two Boston terrier-rat terrier-mix puppies, about 5 months old. They were killed after being stabbed multiple times each. The dogs then were thrown into an open storm ditch behind the residence, the release said.

Police said there was a large amount of blood throughout the residence and a trail of blood leading to the storm ditch, where the dogs were found. Police learned later that the adult pit bull had bitten both men.

After the men killed the dogs, they decided to burn the house to hide the blood and cover up what they had done. Two mopeds were brought into the living room, where most of the blood was concentrated, the release said.

One moped was tipped over to allow fuel to spill and old newspapers were scattered around the floor near the blood stains; the newspaper was set on fire. The fire didn't take and burned only a short time, damaging a small area of carpet.

Police said the residents returned about the time the fire was set. They noticed the mopeds were missing and noticed lights turned on, which were not on earlier.

Two men were observed running from the residence. One of the residents recognized Bartlow.

Attica police located Bartlow at a friend's house in Attica; he had a dog bite on his left forearm and on both hands. Robinson also was bitten on his right shoulder and left hand. Neither required medical attention.

Bloody clothing and shoes were recovered from both men. As of Sunday night, the items reported stolen had not been located and the knife used to stab the dogs had not been recovered, police said.

Members of the Attica Volunteer Fire Department helped recover the dogs from the ditch.

Killing a dog falls under animal cruelty law. It was just made a Class D felony about a year ago.
