A South Devon man and two teenagers have appeared in court accused of 'physically and mentally' torturing a cat.

Colin Sherlock, 44, appeared in the dock with two boys, aged 16 and 17.

Sherlock, from Third Avenue, Dawlish, and the two boys from Teignmouth -- who cannot be named -- are all accused of causing unnecessary suffering to the one-year-old female cat.

It is alleged the cat was put in a microwave oven, tumble dryer and freezer.

All three defendants appeared before magistrates at Torquay yesterday.

The charge alleged: "You caused unnecessary suffering to a female short-haired domestic cat by subjecting her to mental and physical torture through confining her in a microwave oven which was switched on, a tumble dryer which was switched on and by confining her in a freezer." The case was adjourned until October 8. No pleas were entered. The cat is being cared for by the RSPCA.

Case Updates

The man who put a cat in a microwave, tumble drier and freezer, and then dunking it in water, has been sentenced to 126 days on jail and banned from owning an animal for 10 years.

Colin Sherlock, 44, from Newton Abbot, Devon, had filmed the cruelty with his mobile phone in May.

He and two youths who had been with him sent it to their friends' phones. One of the people who received it took it to police, who were able to identify Sherlock by a tattoo.

The video showed him putting his nephew's black and white cat, Roxy, in a microwave and turning it on for eight seconds, pushing it into a drier which is spun for seven second, placed in a freezer for 20 seconds, and then dunked in a bowl of water.

Torquay Magistrates' Court heard that the attack happened at a house in Teignmouth.

The BBC reported that John Wyatt, prosecuting, said the cat is now "extremely nervous and has suffered serious mental trauma."

Alisdair James, who defended Sherlock, said the man was "ashamed" and "gutted."

"I am pleased with the sentence. It sends out a clear message that anyone who carries out acts of cruelty will face justice," the BBC quoted RSPCA Inspector Jim Farr as saying.

"Roxy is now in foster care because of the after effects of this trauma and she is not yet ready to be rehomed.

"She is progressing well but we do to know if there may be long term after effects of being put into the microwave."

TWO Teignmouth teenagers have pleaded not guilty to torturing a cat by placing it in a microwave, a tumble dryer and a fridge freezer.

The 16 and 17 year old boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and of subjecting it to mental and physical torture between March 1 and April 30 this year.

The case has been brought to court by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is currently caring for the one-year-old female, short-haired cat.

At Newton Abbot Youth Court yesterday, defence solicitor Mark Drew said his clients accepted they were present at the time of the cat cruelty.

He also told the court video footage of the cat cruelty existed and had been taken on a mobile phone.

The case was adjourned for trial until January 13, 2011, at Newton Abbot Court.

Colin Sherlock, who admitted also being high on drugs at the time, filmed the stunt on his mobile phone.

The cat's fur is seen smoking after spending ten seconds in the microwave before being put for a spin in the dryer and then placed in the freezer for 20 seconds. She survived and is now being looked after by the RSPCA.

Sherlock, of Dawlish, Devon, admitted causing mental and physical torture and unnecessary suffering to the animal.

As he left court on Friday the 44-year-old said: 'I put my hands up to it. I have made a mistake and I am going to be punished for it. It was a drunken, stupid, drugged-up mistake and if I have harmed anyone, I apologise.'

Chairwoman of the bench at Torquay magistrates' court, Rita Hennaford, warned him he was facing jail but adjourned sentencing until next month for reports.

Two youths, aged 16 and 17, deny cruelty to the cat and will be tried later.
