Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A kitten was tossed from a moving car Friday, but thanks to a caring witness, the little furball has eight lives left.

A North Haven woman got out of her car, scooped up the kitten, and rushed it to the North Haven Animal Hospital at 386 Washington Ave., where it was immediately treated for a concussion and shock.

Animal hospital employees were incensed by the cruelty to the domestic short-hair tiger cat that has black, gray and white markings.

"Somebody was just plain mean," said Dr. James T. Wells. "The person has to be sick. Anybody who would do this is a dangerous person. There should be a police investigation."

The woman who brought the kitten to the animal hospital didn't see the animal tossed from the car, but stopped along with three others cars on Hillfield Road in Hamden when the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. She is unaware if anyone else called police, though a man in his front yard was visibly upset by the situation and was yelling and pointing toward the car, which was heading toward Shepard Avenue. Police said there were no calls about it Friday morning.

"I just took the cat and left," said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.

She said it took about 10 minutes to reach the animal hospital, where Wells and his staff dropped everything to aid the kitten, who has been named Hope.

When the traumatized kitten arrived, her eyes were closed and her mouth and face were bloody. Her right front paw was distorted. She was being checked for a fractured jaw.

"We immediately treated her for shock and a concussion," Wells said, adding that the kitten didn't appear to be sick but will be examined for other issues.

Pat Coppola of Wallingford was at the animal hospital when the the kitten arrived. She said she was disgusted by what happened and will offer a $200 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible.

"Hopefully, we'll get these creeps," Coppola said.

Wells questioned whether the person who threw the cat out of the car had any respect for life and apparently was trying to hurt the cat for no reason.

"If you don't want the kitten, there are a million other things to do," he said.

The woman who brought the kitten to the hospital said she was on Hillfield Road, across from Alice Peck School, when the three cars in front of her hit the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road.

She got out of her car and asked what was happening, then she saw the kitten.

"I was frantic. I grabbed the paper towel in my back seat and grabbed the cat," which was lying on the side of the road.

The woman said she was "so sick to my stomach I could have thrown up" that someone would throw the kitten out the window.

"I didn't think about calling the police. I just wanted to save the kitten. I can't believe someone would do that. It's so sad," she said.

The woman said that either she or a North Haven Animal Hospital employee will be taking the kitten after she recovers.
