Dorchester County Animal Control officers found 10 dead dogs, and seized 31 this week because of neglect and unhealthy living conditions, according to a magistrate's order.
None of the dogs officers found at 144 Traci Lane were healthy, according to a protective custody order authorized Monday by Magistrate F.J. Newton.
The officers issued tickets for animal neglect to Brian Edward Altman of 45 Red Breast Court and Wyly Hampton Reeves of 5054 U.S. Highway 17. Both men received 11 citations each and both have a Nov. 24 court date in Summerville, according to magistrate's office records.
Neither Altman nor Reeves could be reached for comment.
Frances R. Willis SPCA in Summerville has 18 of the dogs. Operations Manager Wendy Seay said the other dogs seized from Traci Lane were released to temporary homes. "They weren't emaciated like the rest of the dogs," she said.
The seized dogs that remain at the SPCA have heartworms, skin problems and sores on their feet and lower legs. "Most of them have severe weight issues," Seay said.
They are hunting dogs that appear to be a mix of walker hound and beagle. The dogs are between 2 and 7 years old. Determining ages has been difficult because their teeth are in bad condition. Teeth can be used to gauge a dog's age, she said.
"I really think that these dogs at this point would be adoptable," she said. "With some crate training and some work they would make wonderful pets." References |
