A Whatcom County man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree animal cruelty for allegedly sexually abusing a goat.

A family member caught Gary A. Veldhuizen, 27, with the animal on Thursday, May 6, at a property near Enterprise Road at Willeys Lake Road, said Sheriff Bill Elfo.

The family member contacted the Sheriff's Office, and Veldhuizen was arrested and booked into Whatcom County Jail.

The Whatcom Humane Society has taken custody of the goat, said Laura Clark, executive director.


Case Updates

A Ferndale man who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a goat in 2010 was booked into jail on suspicion of child molestation Friday morning, March 18.

Gary Allen Veldhuizen, 28, allegedly molested a young girl about two years ago, according to Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo.

The incident was recently reported to Child Protective Services, which notified the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office. Veldhuizen confessed to molesting the girl, and it's believed that the molestation was limited to one incident, Elfo said.

Veldhuizen, who lives in the 2400 block of Grandview Road, was booked into Whatcom County Jail for investigation into first-degree child molestation.

In 2010, Veldhuizen pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree animal cruelty and was sentenced to one month in jail for having sex with a goat.

A Ferndale man pleaded guilty Monday, Oct. 25, to first-degree animal cruelty for sexually abusing a goat at a property near Enterprise Road at Willeys Lake Road in May.

Whatcom County Superior Court Judge Charles Snyder sentenced Gary A. Veldhuizen, 27, to one month in the custody of the Whatcom County Jail.

Veldhuizen has no prior felony convictions and was facing a standard sentencing range of one to three months in jail, according to state guidelines.

A family member caught Veldhuizen having sex with the animal on May 6 and contacted Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies, who arrested Veldhuizen.
