Cat stabbed at least 9 times
Woodbridge, NJ (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Oct 23, 2010
County: Middlesex

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Benjamin Brown

An 18-year-old township man faces animal cruelty charges for allegedly stabbing his mother's cat to death after it scratched her in the face, according to the state Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Benjamin Brown is accused of stabbing the cat at least nine times before hiding the remains under the rear steps of the house in Woodbridge.

Police were called to 30 Kosene St. at about 1 a.m. on Oct. 23, and after assessing the situation they contacted the local animal control office and the SPCA, said Woodbridge Township spokesman John Hagerty.

About 19 other cats were living in the home at the time of the incident, according to the SPCA. Under a township code, no more than five cats are permitted in a single residence.

The township animal control office is working with Brown's mother, Donna Russell, to remove the cats from the residence, Hagerty said. They will be housed at the township's animal shelter or a foster home pending the result of the investigation.

A determination on whether the cats can return to the residence will be made at a later date, he said. Brown is being held in the Middlesex County jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.
