A man who police say has a history of domestic problems in a 10-month-old relationship stretched the limits of his cruelty when he reportedly not only punched his girlfriend, but tried to throw their two-and-a-half month old puppy out the car window.

Duaine Belgarde of Burlingame, 44, had allegedly been drinking at a bar and was returning from Pacifica with his 29-year-old girlfriend and their ill puppy Tuesday evening. He became violent when she confronted him about allegedly being a sex offender. He told her never to bring it up again and said that if she did, he would pull her eyes out of her head, according to the police report.

The puppy threw up in the back of the car and Belgarde grabbed it and threatened to throw it out the car window. His girlfriend rolled up the window and the dog smashed against it instead of flying out. She then put the sick animal on the other side of her to separate it from Belgarde, according to the report.

When the couple got to their home in the 1400 block of Florabunda Avenue, Belgarde allegedly became violent again, punching his girlfriend multiple times in the head and kicking the dog four feet in the air. The woman managed to get away and called police around 11:13 p.m., according to the report.

Belgarde, who police say showed signs of intoxication, was arrested without incident on suspicion of domestic violence, terrorist threats and cruelty to animals.

Burlingame police Cmdr. Jack Van Etten said the relationship has a history of domestic issues, with at least three incidents since the beginning of the year. He could not confirm if Belgarde was a registered sex offender, stating the investigation was still on-going.
