Dog shot to death Shorterville, AL (US)Incident Date: Tuesday, Aug 17, 2010 County: Henry
Charges: Misdemeanor Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Alvin James Grimsley
Henry County Sheriff's deputies charged a 52-year-old man with animal cruelty after he allegedly shot and killed his neighbor's dog, a border collie named Maggie.
Sheriff William Maddox confirmed deputies served a misdemeanor arrest warrant on Tuesday against Alvin James Grimsley, of Henry County Road 36 in Shorterville, for a cruelty to animals charge. Records show Grimsley was released from custody at the Henry County Sheriff's Office after he posted a $500 bond.
Maddox said Grimsley was charged with animal cruelty after he used a .410 shotgun to shoot his neighbor's border collie. Court records show the offense happened on Aug. 17.
Maddox said Grimsley told authorities he shot the dog because he was afraid it would bite his teenage son, who he said was in the yard at the time. Maddox said the dog was shot while it was running away. Maddox said Grimsley also told authorities he likely would not have shot the dog if he'd know it belonged to his neighbor.
"The dog's a house dog, and it got out," Maddox said. "You got the right to protect yourself and your property, but this was a border collie with two collars on just passing through." References |
