An Ypsilanti man accused of beating his dog with a hammer was ordered to stand trial on animal cruelty charges.
Shawn Terell Moore, 27, was bound over to circuit court for trial on counts of animal cruelty/torture and animal abandonment following his preliminary hearing, court records show.
He is accused of beating "Shadow," a Jack Russell Terrier mix, in the head and body with hammer, Ypsilanti police said. Officers responded to his Green Road home on April 1 after getting reports of a man kicking a dog.
Officers arrested Moore without incident. The dog was turned over to the Humane Society of Huron Valley and is recovering.
Moore pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains free after posting 10 percent of a $3,500 bond, records show. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for July 13.

An Ypsilanti man accused of beating a dog with a hammer declined a plea offer from prosecutors and is scheduled to stand trial on multiple counts of animal cruelty this fall.
Court records show Shawn Moore, 27, will face counts of animal cruelty/torture and animal abandonment at a jury trial on Oct. 18.
Moore rejected a plea agreement offered by Washtenaw County prosecutors; details of the plea offer were not part of the court record.
