50 cats and kittens seized, 2 kittens dead
Troy , NY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Oct 1, 2010
County: Rensselaer

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Bertha A. Ryan
» Regina Millard

Regina Millard admitted that she and her sister had too many cats.

"I wouldn't choose to have that many carts," she said.

State police raided her sister's River Road home Friday, seizing 50 cats, ten of them kittens. Police said two more kittens were found dead.

"From what they're saying the majority of the cats appear to be fed but needless to say they overwhemling issue was the smell," Said Lt Nancy Poulin of the New York State Police, Brunswick.

Poulin said neighbors had called them about the smell, and that Millard and her sister Bertha Ryan had intially agreed to give them up.

But before that happened, the sisters allegedly stuffed over 80 of their cats into two cars, driving them to Bennington on October 8th to try to give them to no-kill shelters.

Bennington police were called to a parking lot and seized the cats, many of them reportedly suffering from illness and infection. Millard and Ryan were charged with animal cruelty.

"We didn't intend to be cruel we were trying to get them out of the cold, trying to help. They were out in alley ways, they were starving, trying to keep them from going hungry, trying to help them out," Millard said.

Millard added that her husband has dementia and had started collecting the cats, and as they began multiplying, she said they did their best to keep them fed. Now with over 130 cats gone, she expressed relief.

"In a way, it's a sense of relief because the cats are gonna get a home and they're going to try to help us get them adopted out," she said.

The cats in Friday's raid were taken to the Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society shelter. Poulin said the cats in Friday's raid will be evaluated by a veterinarian before they decide whether to charge the sisters with any offense.
