A reward is now being offered in a local case of animal cruelty.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering $2,500 dollars to anyone with information about who is responsible for abusing a 12 week old pit bull puppy.

The puppy was turned over to the Humane Society of Yuma by a good Samaritan who found it as a stray earlier in the week.

The dog was severely emaciated and its ears had been cut off.

The case is also being investigated by the Yuma Police Department.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police.

Case Updates

A puppy is being nursed back to health after she was found suffering from major neglect and abuse.

Animal control Sgt. Aaron Acton, with the Humane Society of Yuma (HSOY), helped rescue a 12-week-old boxer-pit puppy Tuesday after a call from a concerned citizen. The puppy was found in the northwest part of the city, Acton said Wednesday.

According to a news release from HSOY, the dog is receiving veterinary care and remains in critical condition.

The puppy's ears had been "non-professionally cut with the apparent intention to make her look like a pit bull with cropped ears," the news release said.

"The ears are definitely the worst part of it," Acton said.

That act of "major animal neglect and abuse," Acton said, is a felony.

"We're hoping she'll pull through," he said about the puppy.

Animal control officers are working closely with the Yuma Police Department, according to the release.

Those with information about the case are asked to call animal control dispatch at 782-1621, Ext. 106, or YPD's non-emergency crime reporting hot line at 78-CRIME or 782-7463. Callers can remain anonymous.

HSOY also asks the community to donate to the Roo Bee Cruelty Fund, which was established in 2006 to cover the costs of veterinary care for victims of cruelty.

Donations may be made online at www.hsoyuma.com, by mail or in person at the HSOY office, 285 N. Figueroa Ave. in Yuma. Make checks payable to HSOY with "Roo Bee Cruelty Fund" in the memo line.
