Dog-fighting - 9 dogs seized
Sarasota , FL (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Oct 11, 2010
County: Sarasota

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: George A Haygood

Police arrested a man on nine counts of cruelty to animals after busting up a dog fighting match.

After responding to the 1300 block of 18th Street on an anonymous tip around 3 p.m. Monday, Sarasota police saw a number of people gathered in the back yard, according to an arrest report.

Police found nine pit bulls, including one puppy, in extreme states of injury and neglect, the report said.

Some the dogs were lying in the dirt with infected and untreated wounds, while others were chained or kept in unsanitary wooden boxes on the property, according to police.

Police later located George A. Haygood, 28, of the 300 block of Bailey Road, and charged him with cruelty to animals.

The pit bulls showed signs of malnutrition and had distended bellies and hair loss, indicating possible internal and external parasites, according to police. The dogs were impounded.
